Debt Relief Agency

More and more people are getting into trouble with their credit and overall debt levels. The new bankruptcy laws that were established in 2005 have made it more difficult for these people to discharge their debts completely, and for many individuals bankruptcy is not really an option anymore. With this rising segment of the population running into debt trouble an emergence in the number of so-called debt relief agencies has caused many of these people to wonder what kind of debt relief these companies can really provide them. A debt relief agency may be something worth looking into depending on your situation, but you must be aware that many of these debt relief agencies are only out to take your money and often times cannot provide you with the kind of service you’re looking for.

Debt Relief Options

If you are running into difficulty with your debt and you don’t want to declare bankruptcy under any circumstances then you should be happy to realize that you have many options available to you. A debt relief agency is definitely one of them, but in all honesty should probably be considered as a last resort upon exhaustion of your other options.

First you should take inventory of your current situation and really come to terms with where you’re at with your debt. When it comes to consumer debt and in particular credit card debt it is really just a matter of assessing you current level of income and overall debt level and then forming a plan. If you cannot come up with enough money to begin making monthly payments then it might not be a bad idea to think of some ways to come up with some more money each month. Try working some overtime, getting a second job, selling some of your stuff, or cashing out some of your investments. Cutting down some of your spending can also provide you with the additional funds you may need to make those payments each month.

If you have increased your income and lowered your expenses as much as possible then it is time to make your accounts current. Contact your credit card companies to see what you need to do to make them current, and often times this will only take a few back payments. If you don’t want to keep paying your cards you may be able to negotiate a credit card debt settlement with your credit card company. Don’t make any attempts to repay any of your accounts before you pursue this option because the credit card company needs to see that you are struggling to make your payments before they will grant you a settlement.

Depending on your credit, you may be able to get another loan of some sort to reorganize your debt in a manner that will allow you to pay it off over time under a new repayment schedule. This can be done via the implementation of a personal loan, home equity loan, consolidation loan, or even another credit card. You need to make sure that the new loan you take out does provide you with better terms than your previous debts, and the longer you can string out your payment schedule the more manageable your payment will be.

Debt Relief Agency Reality

If you still cannot get a handle on your debt you may now want to look into a debt relief agency. Before you provide any one of these companies any of your personal information it is vital that you perform the appropriate due diligence so that you can verify the companies’ legitimacy. Many of these companies are quite shady, and even if the company does seem legitimate it is important that you fully understand what you’re getting yourself into before you sign or accept anything. Ultimately these debt relief agencies are for profit companies that want to profit from you in some way or another. You shouldn’t believe everything they tell you and if you have any concerns don’t hesitate to contact a qualified financial professional such as an accountant or attorney.

In the end the best thing these companies can do is provide you with some version of a consolidation loan that may or may not be to your advantage. Some may claim they can negotiate down your debt but in reality you could probably have a better chance doing the same thing. You shouldn’t ever make any outright payment for services they provide, as many of the things they do can be accomplished by yourself with a little research. Always use caution with these companies and if you don’t feel comfortable doing business with a particular company always know that there are usually other options available to you.
